Villefranche
The small town of Villefranche de Conflent lies in a deep mountain cliff on the
Confluence of Cady and Tèt.
It is completely surrounded by a city wall, which over the years
was expanded into a defensive fortification, especially in the 17th century by the great fortress builder Vauban.
On the mountain above the city you can visit the "Fort Liberia".
You can get there in about 30 minutes walk or you take
the jeep, which goes up 4 times a day from the city to the fort.
A third option is "the stairs of 1000 steps"
(in reality there are only 734), which leads through the mountain.
Here, however, you should dress warmly in the summer.
From the station outside the city, a trip with
the "little yellow train" to Bourg-Madame.

Le train jaune
The yellow train is a true symbol of the Pyrénées-Orientales department.
It has been travelling through the hills of the Pyrenees for a century, covering an altitude of a thousand metres over a length of 63 km.
The railway connects Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol, in the midst of exceptional landscapes.
