It is located on an island in the middle of the river Indre.
In the 16th Century the present-day castle Azay-le-Rideau was built on the ruins of a burned-down fortress.
The treasurer of the French King Franz I, Gilles Berthelot, built this charming castle between 1518 and 1527.
The construction work was supervised by his wife Philippa Lesbahy.
Since 1905 the castle has been owned by the French state.
